Julie Christie stars in this inspiring drama based on the novel by Thomas Hardy. Christie shines as a headstrong Victorian era woman who raises eyebrows and flaunts convention when she inherits a farm in rural England and decides to run the large operation herself. Costars Terence Stamp, Alan Bates and Peter Finch play the three vastly different, yet equally determined suitors who compete for the affections of the extraordinary woman.

Much closer to the original novel than the awful remake.

Comments about this product:

The recent remake of this film was disastrous with clothes not true to the era and the wrong regional dialects. This 1967 version is truer to the book with grit and dirt and real folk songs of the day. A slice of Dorset's history rather than an awful Hollywood version. I was born and bred in Dorset and would recommend this film as a true Hardy follower. If you have poor concentration and haven't read the book stick to the awful new edition.

          Comments about this product:

Breathtaking locations, lovely costumes and set decoration. The physical beauty of Julie Christie and Terence Stamp keep one's attention throughout even as the story lags. The sword scene meaning is clear, but grows redundant as the sequence is overly-long. Alan Bates gives strong support as Christie's suitor-in-waiting. Two memorable scenes for me, the confused sheep dog leading the herd to their destruction, and Christie prying open Fanny's coffin to satisfy all doubt of Stamp's unfaithfulness.
