Presented for the first time on DVD, these four Technicolor Westerns confirm McCrea’s iconic status as an enduring Western hero and the embodiment of honor, integrity and courage on the untamed plains of America. Starting in the silent era, Joel McCrea rapidly became one of the most popular and versatile leading men of the early thirties. He was ideally cast in everything from Pre-Code dramas (The Common Law, 1931) to exotic adventures (Bird of Paradise, 1932) to suspense thrillers (The Most Dangerous Game, 1932) but his real forte was Westerns. By the late forties, he began to specialize in frontier sagas due to his immense appeal to fans of the genre.
THE VIRGINIAN (1946)
Based on the best-selling love story of the West, THE VIRGINIAN stars Joel McCrea as a local ranch hand who risks losing his best friend and the woman he loves when forced into a showdown with ruthless cattle thieves. When Molly Wood (Barbara Britton), a well-educated Easterner, arrives in a small Wyoming town to be the new schoolteacher, the Virginian (McCrea) and his best friend, Steve (Sonny Tufts), immediately vie for her affection. Against the warnings of his friend, Steve falls in with the corrupt Trampas' (Brian Donlevy) gang and is caught cattle rustling. The Virginian must choose between their friendship and upholding the severe laws of the West.
CATTLE DRIVE (1951)
One of Joel McCrea's personal favorites, CATTLE DRIVE is an atmospheric frontier tale variation on the adventure story Captains Courageous. Chester Graham, Jr. (Dean Stockwell), the spoiled teenage son of a railroad tycoon, gets lost in the desert but is rescued by Dan Mathews (McCrea), a cattle herder on his way to San Diego. As they head toward civilization together, the young greenhorn soon gets an education in the value of hard work and survival tactics from his experienced guide.
BORDER RIVER (1954)
Joel McCrea stars with Yvonne De Carlo in the Civil War drama BORDER RIVER. Desperately hoping to turn the tide of the war, Confederate soldier Clete Mattson (McCrea) steals $2 million in gold bars from the Union and heads for the Mexican border town of Zona Libre, where he hopes to buy munitions and supplies. With Yankee troops in hot pursuit, Clete soon discovers he might be in a worse situation with a greedy despot (Pedro Armendariz), crooked businessmen and other shady characters intent on double-crossing him.
MUSTANG COUNTRY (1976)Starring Joel McCrea as an ex-rodeo star turned sheep farmer, MUSTANG COUNTRY is an exciting family adventure set in the wilderness. With the help of an orphaned Native American teen (Nika Mina), a mare called Rosie and a scene-stealing dog named Luke, Dan (McCrea) tracks down a magnificent wild black stallion along the Canadian border circa 1925. Filmed on location in the Banff National Park near Alberta, Canada, and co-starring Patrick Wayne (son of John) and Robert Fuller, this appealing film was the final movie starring Western favorite Joel McCrea.
