Pride And Prejudice (1940) DVD

Like the arrows she launches at an archery target during an elegant lawn party, Elizabeth Bennet's wit is pointed and unerring. "If you want to be really refined, you have to be dead," she says, skewering the imperious airs of her hosts. Jane Austen's timeless 1813 novel of unlikely romance is richly adapted in this lavish Academy Award? winner.* Greer Garson portrays spirited Elizabeth, one of five Bennet sisters hoping for matrimony. Laurence Olivier plays Darcy, whose arrival at a nearby estate sets maiden hearts aflutter. But first impressions can mean so very much. Elizabeth and Darcy find reasons to view each other with disdain, setting in motion a velvet struggle of Pride and Prejudice, perception and reality, forgiveness and love. You'll be irresistibly caught up in it.

    Comments about this product:

This is one of my favorites of the old classic films. For my husband and me, it is next to perfect! It is well-written, fast paced, witty, very entertaining, with a great story, with many interesting characters. It has a good plot, is a good social commentary on the times in which the story is set. It is more of a comedy, with good acting by Lawrence Olivier and the entire cast. Edna Mae Oliver is outstanding! This movie will make you smile. Based on Jane Austen's story. Although the remakes of Jane Austen's stories may be superior, in realism, costuming, photography, etc., this one is charming and worth seeing.

        Comments about this product:

Greer Garson as Elizabeth Bennet and Laurence Olivier as Mr. Darcy are wonderful in the lead roles, delivering articulate and sparkling conversational repartee and good on-screen chemistry. The supporting cast members are also wonderful, particularly Edna Mae Oliver who is magnificent, and hysterical, in the role of Madame Catherine. Delightful and intelligent escape movie. I will pull this one out for smiles many times in the future I am sure. Thanks to all involved in making this gem of a movie!

                    Comments about this product:

Greer Garson is proper and very aware of herself and family. Sir Lawrence Olivier is a dashing snob and a well mannered and perfect wealthy gentleman of the period. Edmund Gwenn plays a distinct role as the father of 5 girls. An engaging film of manners and as it is named Pride and Prejudices.

GARSON AND OLIVIER ARE PERFECTLY MATCHED IN THIS PERIOD ADAPTATION OF JANE AUSTEN'S BEST-KNOWN NOVEL. Although the films Description Mistakenly indicates that Garson's Elizabeth pursues Olivier's Mr. Darcy, the outcome is quite surprisingly effective which is why Jane Austen's Novel garnered such favorable attention in the first place. I AM VERY GLAD TO HAVE FOUND IT ON DVD. I WATCH THIS ON RAINY, COLD, SHUT-IN DAYS OR WHENEVER I WANT TO BE TRANSPORTED TO ANOTHER PLACE IN TIME. I JUST NEVER TIRE OF THIS MOVIE; IT IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE. LIKE COMFORT FOOD, IT IS WHAT I CALL A COMFORT MOVIE.
